\u201cDid I ever tell you about my first case?\u201d<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Jayne McCardle, formerly detective sergeant of Fulbarton\u2019s Police force, noted the sparkle in Baylem\u2019s eyes.\u00a0 Until two months ago he had been her boss \u2013 a detective inspector no less \u2013 and things may have stayed the same had the seismic events of July not forced them to wake up and realise what really mattered.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Life was too short, and it took a near-death experience to hammer home that fact.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Leaving the constabulary and the small English town behind them, they started a relationship and set their sights on travelling the world, starting in Canada and working their way south down through the States.\u00a0 Currently they were in Hawaii, sitting in a quiet bar overlooking a sandy beach and a calm sea.\u00a0 Palm trees were in abundance and a clear blue sky was making way for dusk.\u00a0 Moments earlier the sun had slipped away over the edge of the world, leaving the heavens appearing red and orange.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t think you ever have,\u201d replied Jayne.\u00a0 She leaned forward, as though eager to learn more, but in fact was just reaching for her Mai Tai, a cocktail popular on the island.\u00a0 The crushed ice clinked as she raised the glass to her lips.\u00a0 The garnishing of pineapple and lime leaf had been discarded a couple of sips earlier.\u00a0 She recoiled slightly from the alcohol.\u00a0 Kaliko, the island native working behind the bar had been generous with the rum.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cI was fresh out of Uni and passing all the entry exams top of my class and was fast-tracked from a uniformed Bobby to detective inside a year.\u00a0 I found myself working within Scotland Yard for a seasoned DI who was sitting on a murder case that had stumped the whole of London\u2019s CID for six months, and pressure was on to solve it.\u201d\u00a0 Baylem took a swig from a bottle of Kona lager and laughed, \u201cIt didn\u2019t help that the victim was the wife of multi-millionaire businessman Michael O\u2019Connell, brother of the Foreign Secretary.\u00a0 The press were having a field day.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cSeriously?\u00a0 You were on that case?!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWell don\u2019t sound too surprised!\u00a0 I was just a DC then; but the DI \u2013 Kendray was his name \u2013 handed me the file within a minute of my turning up in his office.\u00a0 He looked up at me with desperation in his tired eyes.\u00a0 \u2018I have twenty-four hours to solve this otherwise I\u2019m for the chop,\u2019 he said.\u00a0 \u2018What\u2019s in it for me?\u2019 I asked.\u00a0 I was a cocky little so-and-so back then; brazen and over-confident.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cNot like now,\u201d the woman interjected jokingly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Baylem ignored her.\u00a0 \u201c\u2018I\u2019ll make you DS,\u2019 he told me, \u2018and give you a grand of my own money.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cA thousand pounds?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cA lot of money now, but a king\u2019s ransom back then; but that\u2019s not all Jayne.\u00a0 He also said I could have one of his daughters; he had three, and none of them were bad looking.\u00a0 He showed me a family photograph in a frame!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cHe did, as I\u2019m living and breathing.\u00a0 He was that desperate and dead serious.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWhat did you say to that?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t say anything,\u201d Baylem replied.\u00a0 \u201cI was gobsmacked.\u00a0 I shook Kendray\u2019s hand and left, taking the file with me.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
